In episode 7 we speak to Brian Craig, program director at WEVL, Memphis’s own volunteer radio. WEVL is a completely listener supported gem of terrestrial radio station that has been on the air since 1976. We get into history of the station, what it take to run it, and the programming that makes it so special. It is the only radio to which I consistently listen and getting to visit was exciting. Enjoy the conversation and support your local public station.
1:40 Brian gets into WEVL’s low wattage origins.
5:45 Carl pluggin’ Collierville. I pretend to know something about radio history. How the volunteer system works…benefits and problems.
10:07 WEVL…reflecting (or paralleling) current listening trends? I stumble through another point…but there IS a MAGIC to radio.
14:00 Musicology. Differences between commercial and volunteer radio content. Applying to do a show.
20:45 1973…and beyond. Conversation about Memphis music scene(s). FREEDOM!!!
How is radio, commercial or otherwise, dealing with the digital onslaught?
